It was defined as "aristocratic" by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón and an illustrious traveler from the 1950s, the Swiss Jean-Christian Spahni, considered Ugíjar to be the most picturesque town in the Alpujarra.

This municipality has a good lodging capacity, excellent restaurants and all kinds of shops and services. In addition, its privileged geographical situation, on the border with the Alpujarra of Almería, makes it an ideal place to settle and organize excursions along the different routes of the region, including its own annexes.
